Why the sky clears here
Abisko sits in the lee of the Scandinavian mountains beside Torneträsk, Sweden’s largest alpine lake. The range strips the moisture out of Atlantic weather before it arrives, leaving a pocket of unusually dry, clear air — which is why the aurora research station was built here.
It is a small place: a national park, a mountain station, a chairlift to the Aurora Sky Station on Mount Nuolja. In summer the same valley is the northern trailhead of the Kungsleden, Sweden’s best-known long-distance path.
