The Arctic Circle town, the main gateway into Lapland, and the centre of the Christmas product. Easy to reach, and easy to get wrong.
The gateway, and what to do with it
Rovaniemi sits on the Arctic Circle where the Kemijoki and Ounasjoki meet, and it has the most flights, the most beds and the most operators in Lapland. For a client with a short trip or young children it is the least friction in the whole region.
It is also the busiest place in Lapland in December, and the Santa Claus Village at the Arctic Circle is a mass-market attraction that runs at volume. Sold badly this disappoints a premium client. Sold well, early morning or evening and privately guided, with the meeting arranged in advance instead of queued for — it works, and for families with small children it is the reason they came.
The town rebuilt almost from nothing after 1944, to a plan drawn by Alvar Aalto. Give it an hour with a guide who knows that story. Beyond that, we place clients in river or forest properties outside town and use Rovaniemi as the way in, not the stay.

The Santa product, handled
A private arrangement instead of the queue, timed away from the coach hours. For families this is the anchor of the trip, and the difference between a good version and a bad one is entirely in the scheduling.
First Arctic days
Husky and reindeer sledding, snowmobiling, ice fishing and aurora evenings, all within half an hour of town. Short transfers matter when the party includes small children.
Icebreaker and snow castle at Kemi
Two hours south on the Gulf of Bothnia, an icebreaker sails and a snow castle is rebuilt each winter. A long day out from Rovaniemi, and the only place in the region to do either.
Out of town
River lodges and forest properties fifteen to forty minutes from the airport, with dark enough skies for aurora and none of the December crowd.
