The Region

One park, two villages

Pyhä-Luosto National Park was established in 2005 around the older Pyhätunturi reserve, which has been protected since 1938. The park runs along a chain of quartzite fells, and the two villages sit at either end of it: Pyhä to the south, Luosto to the north. Neither is large. That is the point of sending a client here.

Pyhä has the ski slopes and the steeper terrain. Luosto is quieter still, with the Lampivaara amethyst mine on the fell above it, where visitors dig for their own stones. Between the two lies Isokuru, a gorge about 220 metres deep, with a stepped path and a waterfall at the far end. Allow half a day for it.

Pyhä holds the steepest marked slopes in Finland, and in our judgement the best downhill skiing in the country: a short lift system, proper pitch, and no queue worth the name. There is enough to fill four days around it. Skiing, snowshoe routes into the park, fat-bike trails, snowmobile days on the forest roads, the amethyst mine, the gorge.

Mass tourism has not reached either village. That is the reason to send a client here, and it is also the constraint: there are fewer operators than at Levi or Ylläs, so a programme needs booking further ahead. What the client gets in return is a fell they can walk without meeting anyone.

What We Build Here

Stay, experience, ski, arrive

Small hotels and fell cabins
Stay

Small hotels and fell cabins

A boutique design resort at the foot of Pyhä, a handful of hotels at Luosto, and private cabins with their own sauna in the forest between them. Inventory is limited: Christmas and the February half-terms go early.

Isokuru, amethyst and dark skies
Experience

Isokuru, amethyst and dark skies

The gorge walk, the working amethyst mine at Lampivaara, snowshoe routes into the park in winter, and aurora watching away from any village lighting.

III
Ski

The best skiing in Finland

The steepest marked slopes in the country, on a fell small enough to ski without queuing. We rate it above Levi and Ylläs for anyone who actually wants to ski rather than be seen skiing. Luosto next door is cross-country and fell touring rather than downhill.

IV
Arrive

Ninety minutes from Rovaniemi

Road transfer from Rovaniemi airport, which takes scheduled flights from Helsinki year-round and direct European charters in winter. Both villages are on the same road.

When To Go

Pyhä & Luosto by season

December — January

Polar Night

Blue light rather than full dark, deep snow and very few visitors. The park is silent. Daylight is short enough that programmes need to be modest.

February — April

Light and Snow Together

The strongest window here. Snow at its deepest, daylight back, and the fell tops open for snowshoe and touring days.

June — September

Fell Walking and Ruska

Marked trails through the park, the midnight sun into July, and the ruska colour for about a fortnight from early September.
