A city, and everything beyond it
Tromsø sits on an island well above the Arctic Circle, ringed by fjords and mountains. It is the most urban place in the European Arctic — concert halls, a university, restaurants you can plan an evening around — and that makes it easy to combine comfort with genuinely wild country.
The Lyngen Alps rise across the fjord to the east, giving some of the best ski touring in Northern Europe. Senja, to the south, is quieter and sharper than Lofoten and still relatively unknown. Whales move into the fjords from November, following the herring.

Aurora, whales and Senja
Aurora runs three ways here: a guided minibus hunt that moves to the clear sky, an electric catamaran dinner cruise, or a lodge stay with dark skies on the doorstep. Whales are in the fjords from mid-October to early January. On Senja, Hesten is the hike to send clients up — 1,034 metres, three to four hours return, and better views than Segla next door, which is steeper and more exposed.
Arctic kitchens
King crab, stockfish and Arctic produce handled with real technique. Mathallen brings the local producers under one roof, and the city eats well for its size.
