The glacier gateway. Jostedalsbreen's arms come down almost to the road, and this is the fjord region for clients who would rather do something than look at it.
Jostedalsbreen covers 487 square kilometres and is the largest mainland glacier in Europe. What matters operationally is that its arms come down close enough to reach on foot: the Briksdalsbreen walk is about two and a half kilometres and takes an hour to ninety minutes, and it works for a wide range of ages and fitness.
This is the part of fjord Norway that you get out into, instead of looking at from a deck. The Loen Skylift climbs 1,011 metres in five minutes. There is via ferrata on Hornelen and Mount Hoven, kayaking and ziplines at Loen, and glacier walking with certified guides.
The Briksdalsbreen walk in to the ice, guided glacier days on the Bødalsbreen arm, and the Loen Skylift to 1,011 metres in five minutes. Stryn's summer glacier skiing was closed in 2025 — we check each season before quoting it.
Cabled climbing routes on Hornelen and Mount Hoven, kayaking on the fjord and ziplines at Loen. Guided, and graded honestly.
Hotel Alexandra at Loen is the established spa property and needs four to eight weeks in peak summer. Skaara Living has birdbox cabins 270 metres above the fjord. Knutholmen at Kalvåg and Sølvane Gård for something smaller.
Drive in from Bergen or Ålesund. This sits between the Bergen fjords and Geiranger, and works best as the link.
Waterfalls at full volume, glacier arms at their bluest and the roads open. Fewer visitors than July.
Everything running, warmest weather, and the point at which Alexandra needs booking well ahead.
Colour in the valleys, glacier walking still on and the traffic gone.
May — June: Meltwater. Waterfalls at full volume, glacier arms at their bluest and the roads open. Fewer visitors than July. July — August: Full Season. Everything running, warmest weather, and the point at which Alexandra needs booking well ahead. September: Late Light. Colour in the valleys, glacier walking still on and the traffic gone.
We suggest 2 — 3 nights. 3 nights: A glacier day, a via ferrata or kayak day, and the Skylift — based at Loen throughout. 8 nights: Bergen, then north through Nordfjord to Geiranger and Ålesund. Driving the plateau descents instead of flying over them.
