Ålesund was rebuilt in Art Nouveau after a fire in 1904 and now sits as one of the more architecturally coherent towns on the Norwegian coast. Behind it the Sunnmøre Alps rise straight from the water — Slogen above the Hjørundfjord is often called the finest peak in Norway.
The Hjørundfjord is the reason to come. It runs parallel to Geiranger, takes no cruise traffic, and has a handful of historic hotels along it. For ski touring it is one of the best sail-and-ski bases in Europe.
