Kirkenes is the last town on the Norwegian coast, closer to Murmansk than to Tromsø and further east than Istanbul. It is the northern turning point of the Hurtigruten coastal route, so it works as a start or a finish, and badly as a stop.
What it offers is specific and hard to substitute. King crab is caught in the Barents Sea and pulled up in front of guests. The snow hotel is rebuilt annually. And the Varanger peninsula, an hour or two out, is one of the most productive Arctic birding coasts in Europe — a serious draw for a narrow client, and worth knowing about for exactly that reason.
A small boat of eight to twelve out into the Barents Sea or the Pasvikfjord, hauling traps alongside working fishermen, then the catch cooked on a wood stove in a fishermen's shelter. Around three hours, May to November, and worth booking three to four weeks ahead in season.
The Snowhotel is rebuilt every December and holds its ice rooms at about minus four. Heated cabins sit alongside it, and most guests look round the ice and sleep warm. Husky kennels on site. Book three to four months out.
Steller's eider and king eider winter along this coast, with large seabird colonies further out. Inland, Øvre Pasvik has brown bears from June to September. Both need a specialist guide and the right month, and neither is general sightseeing.
