Alta sits at the head of a long fjord, but its value to a programme is that it faces inland. The coast further west gets the weather off the Atlantic; Alta gets the drier continental air behind it. Statistically that means more cloud-free nights, which is the only variable that matters when a client has come for the aurora.
The town itself is plain working Finnmark — a regional centre with an airport, a cathedral built for the light, and the rock carvings at Hjemmeluft, inscribed by UNESCO and dating back some 7,000 years. South of here the road runs to Kautokeino and the Sámi interior.
Sorrisniva builds a new ice hotel every winter and has a warm hotel next to it, open all year. Also lodges along the Alta river and a handful of small hotels in town.
Guides drive to wherever the sky is clearest that night. Snowmobile and sled trips onto the Finnmarksvidda plateau. The Northern Lights Cathedral is in the centre of town.
Kautokeino, inland to the south, is one of the two main Sámi towns in Norway. We book through Sámi-owned businesses only. The reindeer migration happens in spring and cannot be moved to suit a booking.
Direct flights from Oslo and Tromsø into Alta. From there it is road to Kautokeino and the Finnish border, or a short flight east to Kirkenes.
