Finland in Summer: The Midnight Sun, Lakeland & the Archipelago

Finland’s summer is quiet and generous: mirror-still lakes, lakeside saunas and, in the north, a sun that never sets.

Most of the world knows Finland in winter. Our specialists quietly send the discerning ones in summer — when the country’s 188,000 lakes lie flat as glass, the sauna culture comes fully into its own, and the south-western Archipelago Sea offers some of the most sheltered, beautiful sailing in Europe.

Lakeland and the ritual of the sauna

The Finnish Lakeland, centred on vast Lake Saimaa, is the country’s warm heart in summer: a private villa with its own dock, a wood-fired lakeside sauna, and the unhurried ritual of löyly — water on hot stones. In summer, fresh birch whisks (vihta) are part of the experience; in winter, an ice hole in the frozen lake waits outside the door.

There are more saunas than cars in Finland, and in summer you understand why. We design these stays as deliberately empty time, the pause at the centre of a longer Nordic journey.

The midnight sun, the Finnish way

In Lapland the June sun never sets; even in the south the summer nights barely darken. The Finnish version of the phenomenon is gentler than Norway’s coastal drama — a paddle across a glass-calm lake at midnight, a round of golf at one in the morning, wild blueberries picked in golden half-light.

It pairs beautifully with wildlife: the brown-bear hides of the eastern taiga, near the Russian border around Kuhmo, are at their finest through the long, light nights of June and July.

The archipelago no one mentions

Off Turku lies the Archipelago Sea — by island count one of the largest archipelagos in the world, tens of thousands of islands and skerries threaded by bridge, cable ferry and private boat. We build slow island-hopping routes around design hotels, island saunas and open-air seafood, finishing in Helsinki for its Baltic dining and Alvar Aalto architecture.

How we design it

Summer Finland is about the right villa on the right lake. We focus on private lakeside houses and frame the Lakeland calm with a few nights of Helsinki design and Archipelago Sea sailing.
