Þingvellir is where the Icelandic parliament was founded in 930 and where the North American and Eurasian plates visibly separate. The Silfra fissure between them holds glacial meltwater filtered through lava for decades, giving the clearest freshwater visibility anywhere.
Geysir gave its name to every geyser on earth; Strokkur beside it erupts every few minutes. Gullfoss drops into a canyon and was saved from a hydro scheme in the early twentieth century. The route is busy — which is why we run it in reverse, or early, or after dark in winter.
