The sauna is the soul of Finland — lakeside and unhurried. A private session, a swim and a long evening by the water. Summer brings birch whisks; winter brings the ice hole.
There are more saunas in Finland than cars, but the ones worth designing a visit around are the lakeside ones — heated slowly, used at leisure, with cold water and silence beyond the door.
In summer we add fresh birch whisks (vihta), made from branches cut at the right moment and used to gently beat the skin for circulation and scent. In winter, an ice hole (avanto) in the frozen lake replaces the swim. Both are part of the same ritual, adapted to the season.
Smoke saunas — the rarest and oldest form, where the fire heats the room directly — do exist and we can arrange access to them, but they require advance planning and are not available everywhere. We are honest about what is genuinely accessible.
Summer offers the birch whisk and a warm lake swim. Winter offers the dramatic contrast of a frozen lake plunge. Both are the real thing, just different.
Genuine smoke saunas are rare and require 4–6 hours to heat. We can access them for clients who specifically want the experience, but they need advance planning and are not a standard add-on.
The heat and cold contrast is intense. Guests with cardiovascular conditions should check with a doctor first — we always flag this.
